Rock Show Review 6 Days From Sunday – “Just Like Oatmeal ” (2003) The first thing that comes to mind when you get to know the heart behind the pop/rock alternative band Six Days From Sunday from Gainsville, Florida is ministry. With their trendy new approach to Christian rock, Six Days’ new release “Just Like Oatmeal” will immediately get your attention and tug at your heart strings. They’re definitely a ministry band, but not just for the lost. “6dfs” – as they go by for short – believes that they are also called to minister to the pew warmers and reach those who are still in the church and going to hell. The heart behind the band is apparent in the songs that touch on everything from deep worship to living a bland Christian life as stated in the outstanding title track “Just Like Oatmeal”. Getting straight to the matter, this song confronts the hypocrisy that we sometimes live out through our faith: “Seated in a holy room, it feels like a stained glass tomb, with dried up corpses propped on pews, looking solemn with bowed heads. And if the Spirit starts to flow, it’s twelve o’clock and time to go, acting like they do not know their Messiah ain’t still dead…And what about that crazy way we tell each other that we’ll pray, acting like those words we say will somehow take away the pain. Then home alone in privacy, instead of hitting bended knee, we punch the power on our TV and miss the blessing once again.” Talk about confrontation. 6dfs tells it like it is. Something we all need to check! With uncompromising lyrics, this band is not interested in “crossing over”, but keeping the music purely Christ centered in nature. Along with the radio hit “Just Like Oatmeal”, 6dfs also offers some awesome arrangements on the hooky song “Superstar” which is a funky little tune that deals with the thought that we sometimes think we have to become something great in order to be used by God. Lead singer Robert Privette shows his vocal stuff on this song with some cool vocal licks – his voice has a unique signature, but if it sounds close to anything, it would be Matchbox 20’s Rob Thomas, only with a lot more character. The guitar arrangements primarily by lead guitarist Eric Corpus on this CD are extremely pop-groove driven with a rock edge and well deserving of the exposure the band has received this far. Already opening for national acts like Everyday Sunday, 6dfs keeps a busy tour schedule and expects to hit the road a lot more from here on out. Excellent production by former Petra member Ronny Cates of Rec Room Studios, and the great songwriting team of Robert Privette and Eric Corpus bring this album to the top of the list of great independent releases. Additional songwriting contribution on “Fly Spirit Fly” by Robert & Paul’s dear old dad, Malcolm Privette is definitely a winner combining classic rock and black gospel with a gospel choir to boot. And the simple but beautiful modern worship chorus “Let Your Spirit Fall” by Ben White brings the heart of worship this band has to the forefront. Overall, this is a great album that has something for everyone to fill up on – so dig in and grab yourself a dish of oatmeal goodness by checking out this awesome band further at: www.6dfs.com |
