Indie
Rock Show Review After getting to know the music of this amazing band from Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada, it only confirms that Threadline is living proof that indie bands would beat the snot out of major label artists on the charts if they only had a little more money, exposure, and staffed promoters working for them. The music on Threadline’s newest release “Undefined” rocks – period. With an explosive combination of rock styles similar to Blindside, Sum 41, Chevelle, & Hoobastank, there’s no doubt that Threadline takes the cake with the strongest of musicianship, arrangements and songwriting to rival any mainstream band. These songs would fare well on any top 40 radio station and would fit right in with the best of the best on Mtv’s TRL Charts – I’m just waiting for the video to come out and put the rest to shame. Threadline has already played with hot hitters such as Thousand Foot Krutch, 38th Parallel, Pillar, Audio Adrenaline, Skillet and Tree 63 and keeps a busy tour schedule throughout Canada and some of the northern United States. It’s only a matter of time before everyone’s heard of them. If I have anything to say about it, they will. Newly signed to the Canadian indie label Bloodgood Records, Threadline consists of band members Blair Backman on lead vocals, Derek Eastveld and Alex Stobbe on guitars, Chris Stevens on drums, and Jeff Neufeld on bass guitar. The entire CD is a collection of homeruns with driving songs like “Fall Short” and “Too Far” taking the lead. And with outstanding production by the band itself, it’s hard to believe this is indie. Threadline’s performance is flawless, but not so much as to sound over commercialized. With just enough rough edge, these songs are heavy with driving guitars and lyrics that are not only full of hope, but confront life experiences and issues like faith and even suicide. The songwriting team of Blair, Alex & Derek is a winning combination with hooks that will snag any crowd from the onset. Best song on the CD has to be “Too Far” which grabs you by the gutts on the very first beat. The guitars on this song are killer – full of energy and never a dull moment. Awesome arrangement – I can’t say enough. “Fall Short” follows pursuit as another killer song and speaks of how we “fall short” of the price Christ has paid for us. The energy of this band never stops. It’s enough for this rocker girl to catch a plane up north to God’s country just to see them live. “Almost” has a really cool Sum 41 feel to it and the cool hooky chorus: “You almost had me, I'm not falling for that anymore, You almost had me, One foot in & one out the door, You almost had me, talking the Talk, but walking away, You never had me, I'm a better man today”. “Pass Me By” – what a song. This is something we all deal with a lot – missing our chance to say what we should have said to someone, letting our pride get in the way – this can cover just about anything from saying I’m sorry, to telling someone about Christ. Awesome lyrics! And as with the rest of the songs, killer guitar arrangements – which is very important in my book! I must also note that Blair Backman’s voice is so so kewl – much more solid and edgy than Sum 41’s frontman Deryck – you blow us away Blair! So what are you waiting for? Go grab the CD at www.threadline.ca while you still can.
